Two squads of New Zealand korfballers travel to South Australia this weekend to participate in the inaugural Oceania Regional Korfball Championships in Adelaide.
A North Island team, combining players from Auckland and Wellington, and a South Island team, consisting of Canterbury korfballers, will compete against what are effectively state teams from Victoria – under the auspices of the Bacchus Marsh Melton Korfball Association – and South Australia – which will be represented by two teams: Adelaide Blue and Adelaide Gold. The round-robin tournament will determine the first Oceania regional champion, in what Korfball New Zealand and Korfball Australia hope will become an annual Trans-Tasman challenge.
All players are vying for inclusion in their respective national teams that will compete in the Asia Oceania Korfball Championship in Hong Kong in July. The weekend will be rounded out by an Australia vs New Zealand international on Sunday afternoon.
Korfball New Zealand gratefully acknowledges the support of The Southern Trust for assistance to the two NZ regional squads.
