New Zealand landed a bronze medal in the inaugural International Capital Cup korfball tournament in Taipei over the weekend, finishing behind the Asia-Oceania region’s korfball heavyweights Chinese Taipei and Australia.
Coach Tim Asby was satisfied with the performance in an event that is a warm-up for the Asia-Oceania Korfball Championship from 4-9 July in Hong Kong.
In what he said was a pleasing overall squad effort, Asby was reluctant to single out individuals, but commended Canterbury player Anna Teen for her performances over the weekend, which won her the award for the tournament’s best female defender. He also praised 17 year old Aucklander Melissa Robinson, who held her own in defence against the far more experienced Australian team, and complimented Wellingtonian Dan Gyles for his all-round contribution, capped by a decisive goal in the bronze medal match against Japan.
